New Year's Flowers FAQ
What are traditional New Year’s flowers?
Given the diversity of the United States, floral traditions from across the globe have grown popular on New Year’s Eve. Nonetheless, a few flowers have earned nostalgic appeal. The rose has been a popular New Year’s Day symbol ever since the first Rose Parade in 1890. The Rose Parade initially celebrated Southern California’s warm winter weather, which is hospitable to flowers. So, while the New Year’s rose was originally a California symbol, the enduring popularity of the parade has made it a beloved New Year’s flower nationwide. The narcissus is the birth flower of December, and the carnation is the birth flower of January. As New Year’s Eve celebrates the commencement of December unto January, these flowers will add a symbolic touch to any New Year’s Eve bouquet; and they look beautiful, too! Many people ring in the New Year by popping open a champagne bottle. A lily, with its gracefully peeled petals, looks almost like a champagne bottle popping open, and so it fits harmoniously with New Year’s decor. Lilies also come in an elegant variety of wintry colors. The poinsettia is tightly associated with Christmas, especially given its luxurious red and green leaves. But it makes for a great decorative or gift-giving plant throughout the holiday season.
